A Week Full of Basketball!

There is never an uneventful week when it comes to Baylor Spirit Squad!  This past weekend started off strong with cheering at a men’s basketball game against Texas Tech.  After this win, the celebrations continued with some of the team coming over our house and hanging out in each other’s company!  The next day, it was time to support our acrobatics and tumbling team against West Liberty.  The weekend came and went once again, and on Monday morning it was back to the grindstone for the Songleaders.  At 5:20am, my alarm notified me it was time to wake up, and by 6:00am our team was together in the dance room at Marrs Mclean ready to start our day.

We are gearing up for competition season where we compete against other colleges around the country in Orlando, Florida.  This is an opportunity to showcase our talents and what we do as a team.  We work extremely hard all year to show the nation why we are the best of the best.  Monday’s practice was dedicated to focusing on our routine and finalizing different aspects so that we could feel confident for the rest of the week.

On Tuesday, we had team workouts.  We work out at D1 Training, where they prepare us to be game ready, looking, and feeling our best.  Having a set workout with our strength coach allows us to maintain our stamina so that we can dance at all events without missing a beat.  After we finished our school day, it was time to prepare for the women’s basketball game against University of Oklahoma.  This game was insane and ended going into overtime! Unfortunately, the Bears fell to the Sooners within the last few seconds.

We ended up getting Wednesday morning practice off due to how late the game ended the night before.  This is a rare occurrence getting practice off, so we all took full advantage of this and slept in the next morning!  The all-girl and coed team was scheduled to cheer for the men’s basketball game, so dance team got to enjoy the night off or attend the game as a student!

Thursday came and we had workouts once again.  I love being able to dedicate our off days to our strength training.  Thursday deals with full body workouts with an emphasis on cardio, which is essential for the Baylor Songleaders.  The rest of my day was focused on catching up on schoolwork.

The next day was Friday, and with that came another early morning practice!  This day was fun getting to go over dances we perform at basketball games and making sure we were all on the same page with our dances.

Saturday the men’s team was away at TCU, and we do not get to travel to away games.  But, that did not stop us from cheering on the Bears! We had a watch party at our house hanging on the edge of our seats as the final seconds ticked down and the Bears beat the Frogs!
